Though it is true that most of the games developed today feature several OS compatible versions, but you would also need to consider the availability of particular gaming software in your area, and a quick comparison of its prices for various operating systems in the market. Go through with review of rates and availability of your desired gaming software, and now you would be in a better position to decide about choosing the most compatible OS for your games.

You should also take into consideration the OS being most widely used in your social circle including the people whom you interact daily through e-mails and chats. In my opinion, I would rate Windows OS as the best option for gaming. This is primarily because some of the most entertaining and popular games in the last decade have been made on the Windows platform. I still recall having a double boot option of windows 98 and windows XP in my PC way back in 2000, because some of the games like IGI would run better on windows 98.

More recently though, Windows Vista has been a put off simply because it uses the PC resources more for itself than for gaming applications. However, I would rate Windows XP as the best option for gaming, because it uses very little PC resources to run and dedicates the maximum chunk for smooth running of gaming applications. And as far as running of latest games is concerned in XP, you always have the option of installing a 1-2 GB graphic card for Hardware Texture &  Lighting support and enjoy the same kind of graphics one would enjoy with a Vista or a Windows 7.
